AHA 3: Techniques - Concentration, Mantra & Contemplation

Course Description

Our technique is our vehicle for ascending into the higher worlds. The last three major categories of meditation technique powerfully embody this role:

3. Concentration: We work at developing one-pointed concentration on a single object or idea to the exclusion of all else. Our mind then becomes a focused beam of spiritual energy that resonates in harmony with the vibration of our soul.

4. Mantra: We repeat potently energized phrases that awaken a tremendous spiritual force and lift our mind beyond this physical plane of existence into the higher realms.

5. Contemplation: Contemplation is meditation on sublime ideas, images, or concepts. Through inner reflection, our consciousness penetrates the Universal Mind of God.

Contents

Session One: Concentration

When we concentrate a beam of sunlight in a magnifying glass it can burn a hole through paper and a fire. Similarly, when we focus the energy of our mind it creates an intense spiritual force that shuts out all external input and breaks through our finite physical reality to lift our mind into the transcendent space of the supernal worlds.

Session Two: The Structure of a Jewish Mantra

Just as our visual mind uses spiritually-potent images to take us into the Divine presence, mantra repetition uses spiritually charged sound to block out distracting thoughts and awaken positive spiritual vibrations in our consciousness. This session outlines the different components that make up a mantra and the characteristics of each element in its structure.

Session Four:The Role of Contemplation in Judaism

Contemplation is probably the most widespread form of meditation in Judaism. It plays a central role in the sutdy of scriptures and the more mystical forms of prayer. This session explores the nature and workings of contemplation meditation, and how it transforms our relationship with the world around us.

Session Five: Reflecting on a Transcendent Reality

True contemplation transcends the limitations of the lower concrete mind and lifts us into the wide spaces of the higher abstract mind. We move from studying the details of facts and figures to reflecting on the universal patterns that flow through all levels of the universe.
